If you live in or have even ever visited Ojai, chances are you've heard of the Ojai Studio Artists, and chances are you've seen a peace pole somewhere in the valley.
You may have Marta Nelson to thank for both.
She and two other artists founded the OSA and the annual studio tour in the late 1980's. The decades since have seen tremendous cultural and economic support for the arts, and the Ojai Studio Artists Tour (this year on October 13, 14, and 15) is an annual event that's part of the fabric of Ojai's identity.
A long-time peace advocate, Marta has been including peace doves in her artwork for many years. She started Ojai Artists for Peace as a way of encouraging other artists to do the same. Marta works in many mediums, and has also created or led efforts to install several peace poles around the valley, including at her home at the Gables.
This year, on the International Day of Peace, Marta organized a multi-generational event and contest for making unique and portable peace poles, which resulted in dozens of artistic expressions of peace and hope.
Thank you, Marta, for your generosity, talent, and infectious enthusiasm for art and peace, and for understanding how deeply connected and powerful both are to one another. Thank you for encouraging and inspiring us all to be creative and build a culture of peace.
